Position Summary:
Maintains the cleanliness and security of the town's library building, and performs minor maintenance or repair work as assigned. Related work as required or a situation demands.
 

Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Reports into Evening Building Supervisor at beginning of shift.
     
  2. Performs a variety of daily cleaning duties such as sweeping, vacuuming, washing or disinfecting.
     
  3. Dusts furniture and surfaces; cleans Main Desk top on Mondays and Wednesdays.
     
  1. Washes entrance door glass daily.
     
  1. Informs Building Maintenance Worker of need to change and replace light bulbs via “Maintenance Request Form” (orange).
     
  1. Cycles through the entire building emptying trash containers and storing trash collected for insertion in outside dumpster by Building Maintenance Worker. Separates recyclable objects found in trash units.
     
  2. Cycles through entire building collecting paper and cardboard recycling from all office and service areas. Prepares same for collection in recycling container by Building Maintenance Worker.
     
  1. Informs daytime Building Maintenance Worker of the need to re-order adequate supplies and tools.
     
  1. Daily cleans all toilets and urinals – inside and out, wiping down all surfaces and disinfecting.
     
  1. Daily cleans all faucets, fixtures and bathroom mirrors, wiping down all surfaces with cleaner.
     
  1. Daily cleans and disinfects public drinking fountain.
     
  1. Cleans and disinfects KOALA diaper-changing station.
     
  1. Daily stocks all four bathrooms with toweling, sanitary supplies and toilet paper.
     
  1. Washes all four bathroom floors during evening shift.
     
  1. Empties sanitary supply receptacles and diaper pails daily.
     
  1. Moves and rearranges furniture, material and equipment as directed.
     
  1. Spreads ice melt or sand, and shovels outside in the event of inclement weather during evening shift.
     
  1. Daily vacuums Technical Services Area and Staff Lounge Area during evening shift.
     
  1. Once daily damp-mops Staff Kitchen floor during evening shift.
     
  1. Daily sweeps tile stairway and vacuums rugs by entrance doors, Washes down quarry tile stairway and quarry tile lower hallway on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
     
  1. Weekly discards unlabeled foodstuffs from Staff Kitchen refrigerator.
     
  1. Informs Meeting Room groups of hour, fifteen minutes prior to evening closing at 11:00PM.
     
  1. Monitors the evening use of stairways and elevator.
     
  1. Performs routine security check of the building and alarm system before closing.
     

Required Experience, Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Ability to read, write and follow directions and to read and follow instructions on the labels of chemical supplies.  Ability to use small hand tools for occasional repairs.  Must be able to perform a wide variety of physical duties without any difficulties. Ability to work independently.  Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
 

Education, Training, Special Licensure/Certification Requirements:
High School Diploma or GED desirable supplemented by some training in general or professional cleaning skills.
 

Contacts (boards & committees, vendors, general public, etc.):
Frequent contact with Library staff, public and evening meeting room attendees – often Town Boards and Committees.
 

Supervisory Responsibility (Include Positions Supervised):
Works under the direction of the Assistant Library Director. Work does not involve any supervision. Routine work performed under well-established practices and procedures within a clearly established framework.
 

Responsibility for Operating Budget:
None. Responsible for the safety and security of the facility and of after-hours meeting attendees during evening shifts.
 

Primary Physical Requirements:
Manual use of cleaning equipment and supplies, vacuum cleaner, broom, shovels.  Regular and frequent lifting up to 20-30 pounds. Depth, color, peripheral and distance vision routinely required. Ability to hear, talk, walk, sit, bend, reach, grasp.  Occasional need to climb, balance, stoop, kneel or crouch.

Summary of Occupational Exposures:  
Work performed indoors under typical library conditions and on rare occasions outdoors, possibly  in adverse weather conditions. Some exposure to the hazards associated with chemicals. Errors could results in damage to building or equipment, injury to employees or library patrons.  Low to moderate noise levels for indoor work resulting from vacuum and cleaning equipment.
