GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for planning, developing, promoting, and providing services to children as well as serving the public using an automated circulation system.

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Specific Key Elements/Tasks and Specialized Tasks to be Accomplished.

I.       Children’s Services.

A.              Plans and conducts weekly preschool story/craft time during the school year.

B.              Plans and implements the Summer Reading Program for children and families.

C.             Plans and/or assists with other programs as needed.

D.             Provides reader’s advisory.

E.              Works with parents, teachers, daycare providers, school librarians, and other professionals in choosing resources for the children they serve.

F.              Assists with school and community outreach.

G.             Conducts library tours.

H.             Maintains book displays.

I.                Assists with the creation of public relations materials.

J.               Assists with grant preparation.  (Example: Local Cultural Council Grants)

K.              Addresses space constraint issues through the rearrangement of furniture and materials.

II.     Circulation Services.

A.              Staffs the circulation desk.

1.                 Checks out/in library materials.

2.                 Shelves and shelf-reads library materials.

3.                 Processes reserve/hold/ILL requests.

4.                 Processes overdue notices.

5.                 Provides reference services (by telephone and in person).

6.                 Answers telephone queries.

7.                 Monitors use of the library.

8.                 Records patron usage statistics.

9.                 Handles patron complaints in absence of Library Director.

10.            Assists patrons in using library technology.  (Example: automated “card catalog,” the Internet, word processing software)

11.            Assists patrons in locating library materials.

12.            Registers new patrons.

13.            Collects and records copier/fax fees.

14.            Collects and records monetary donations.

15.            Informs patrons of and enforces library policies.

16.            Supervises/trains volunteers.

17.            Opens/closes the library facility as required.

B.              Provides reader’s advisory.

C.             Maintains book displays.

III.  Collection Management/Development.

A.              Processes library materials.

B.              Reads book review sources and purchases library materials.

C.             Chooses Bookmobile items.

D.             Assists with weeding.

E.              Repairs print materials.

IV.  Other related duties as required.

A.              Cleans computers.

B.              Using GUICAT, enters and deletes bibliographic records in C/W MARS database.  (This includes both library and Bookmobile records.)  Streamlines daily activities/duties/workload.

 

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE (List knowledge, skills, abilities and physical requirements)

REQUIRED:
Experience and genuine enjoyment of working with patrons of diverse ages and ethnicities; ability to learn and use basic reference techniques; willingness and ability to learn new library procedures; ability to work independently and to adapt to a fast-paced work environment; ability to supervise volunteers; computer literacy; commitment to ongoing professional development; dependable and flexible with regard to hours; high school diploma.

DESIRABLE:
Library experience; experience using Innovative Interfaces or other automated library system; Basic Library Techniques training courses; BA/BS.

LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

REMARKS
Ability to use computers/peripherals, photocopier and fax machine.  Light, physical effort may be required in performing typical library functions such as carrying and shelving books.  Also, frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching and climbing are requirements of this job.
