Dear Mass Library System Members,

I am writing to let you know that the Council of Members approved a number of items at our Annual Meeting on November 7 including (1) the 2017-19 strategic plan, (2) the FY 2018 plan of service and (3) new board members.

The STRATEGIC PLAN: 2017-2019 was approved with its three goals:

  1. MLS will build and nurture a co-creator culture within the Massachusetts Library Community.
  2. MLS will help member libraries to expand capacity for marketing and communications.
  3. MLS will position the Massachusetts Library Community for future readiness.

We will begin implementation right away and we can sure use your help. We need active members to bring this to fruition.

Please let us know if you would like to be involved by EMAIL, phone (508-357-2121 x303), or complete our ONLINE FORM.

The Plan of Service/Budget for fy2018 was approved, assuming level funding.

MLS will do everything that we possibly can with level funding. We are facing a harsh reality that we have incurred major cost increases over the past few years and have managed to deliver level services with level funding. Next year this will not be possible, however. There are a few areas that will be affected.

We are now working with MBLC on procurement for statewide database services. Although the funding level is down 30% since the most recent procurement, we’ll do our best to stretch the dollars to provide online content.

Delivery services will continue to provide normal service for some 14.2 million items. We need to trim Saturday stops and move a few low-volume libraries to US mail, which will slow down about .8 million patron requests.

An unavoidable vacancy will inhibit our efforts and result in fewer training events and consultations. However, our consulting staff of six will be there for you as all of us at MLS will be. Let us know how we can help.

We hope that when the call comes to advocate for the library legislative agenda, that you will be with us in contacting your legislators to ask for support.
