Why have a wordpress.com account?

Having a user name with WordPress.com is very useful. It gives you the very handy and necessary API (Application Programming Interface) key you need to activate certain plug ins.

Go to the WordPress.com site to get your user name.

You will be asked to create your user name. Be careful how you select – the user name cannot be changed!

You will need to create a password – this can be changed later.

And finally you need to submit your email!

Plugins and Widgets – What are they???

Plugins and Widgets are both bits of code added to your blog for adding functions.

Plugins are tools to extend the functionality of WordPress. Plugins offer custom functions and features so that each user can tailor their site to their specific needs. They enhance what you can do with your blog beyond what is offered with any particular template.

WordPress Widgets (WPW) are like a plugins, but designed to provide a simple way to arrange the various elements of your sidebar content (known as “widgets”) without having to change any code.
Widgets include Archives, Search, RSS Feeds, Recent Posts, Recent Comments, Tag Clouds, etc.

Installing a plugin often results in a new widget! For example, the plugin for the MiniMeta Widget.
