Library Department

Library Assistant II

 

Statement of Duties
Performs librarian tasks for a Library department.  Has responsibility for one or more specialized tasks or programmatic functions. Performs other duties as required.

 

Supervision
Works under the general supervision of staff librarians or the director who provide goals and objectives; performs tasks with a high degree of independence.  Library policies and procedures are available and must be observed and followed.

May have access to confidential or financial information
 

Job Environment
This is varied work, involving many detailed operations at times. Specific tasks may involve working toward deadlines; analyzing and compiling information; use of technical or financial skills; working with groups in a teaching or coaching role.

Errors could result in delay or loss of service and monetary loss, damage to equipment, patron dissatisfaction.

Constant contact with Library patrons.  Other contacts are with other town employees, historical societies, vendors, and school employees.  Contacts are usually in person or by phone. 
 

Essential Functions

Performs all functions listed for Library Assistant (I) category with minimal supervision, as well as accepting responsibility for one or more of the following.

Suggest, develop and coordinate specialized programs within parameters set by the Director or supervising librarians.  Such programs include, but are not limited to Young Adult reading program, school vacation programs and various summer reading programs.

Research, suggest and purchase specific categories of library materials within parameters set by the Director.  Such categories include, but are not limited to periodicals, videos and CDs.

Perform bookkeeping duties, including accounts payable, bi-weekly payroll request, and various reports prepared for Director’s review.  Assist with purchasing requirements.  May assist with annual budget preparation.

Assist with computer system maintenance. Tasks include but are not limited to system backup, software application installation, troubleshooting problems.  May consult with hardware/software support staff.  May train staff.
 

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

            Education and Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent and successfully completed college level courses in Library Science, or Liberal Arts, and/or have served at least two (2) years in library work.  Must be able to demonstrate possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the work.
