Bolton Public Library

 Library Assistant

 

 

Position Purpose:

The purpose of this position is to perform basic library duties including shelving library materials and locating materials for patrons at the Bolton Public Library. The incumbent performs all other related work as required.  The Library Assistant is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her direction and control.

 

Supervision:

Supervision Scope: Performs routine duties requiring the exercise of basic judgment and initiative to perform duties and complete assigned tasks.

Supervision Received: Works under the direct supervision of the Library Director and the Assistant Library Director; refers all questionable cases to supervisor.

Supervision Given: None.

 

Job Environment:

Majority of work is performed under typical office and library conditions; the noise level is moderate. Library operating hours may require evening and weekend work.

Operates telephone and other standard office/library equipment.

Has frequent contact with the general public. Contacts are primarily in person and by telephone and involve an information exchange dialogue.

Has no access to confidential information.

Errors could result in confusion and delay and may cause adverse public relations.

 

Essential Functions:

Restocks or re-shelves returned materials to proper location within the Dewey decimal system. May be required to shift shelves or materials, if needed. Checks materials to ensure they are well presented and in good repair.  Performs repairs on all types of materials according to established standards and practices.

Performs a variety of clerical duties including preparing materials of all types for circulation.

May occasionally provide information over the telephone concerning library hours, available materials, museum passes, or materials on loan from other sources.

Regular attendance and punctuality at the workplace is required.

Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.

 

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience:

High School education or equivalent required, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
 

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Knowledge:  Working knowledge of library policy and procedures. General knowledge of the library collection. Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System of Classification.

Ability:  Ability to communicate effectively with all members of the public in a courteous and tactful manner. Ability to process and repair all types of materials according to established standards and practices.

Skill:  Skill in all of the above listed tools and equipment. Excellent public relations skills to deal with people effectively and appropriately.

Tasks require the ability to exert physical effort in light to moderate physical activity, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (up to 25 pounds). Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
